Nagapattinam is a small port town in the east coast of Tamil Nadu. It hit the headlines three years back as one of the places most affected by Tsunami. My story also has some connection with the destruction caused by the sea waters.
Soundaraja Perumal Kovil in Nagapattinam is one of the 108 divya desams of the Vaishnavites. Almost all temple towns have the temple at the center and the houses built in rows around the temple to form Veedhi or streets. Our ancestors lived in the street which is on the right hand side of the Soundaraja perumal koil. Adjacent to their home is the Krishnar koil. They owned almost an entire village by name Perungkadamanoor, a few kilometers away from Nagapattinam.Very affluent, some of them also took up employment as officers in the port as a hobby. They had taken interest in a small temple built for Lord Krishna by some Raja in 14 th century. They spent all their time and energy to revive the glory of this temple. Nithya pujas (Daily pujas) were performed elaborately by the men of the household as all of them were highly qualified in vedas to be priests.
But then this peaceful life came to an abrupt end when all their property was destroyed by the sea ingress in 1875. They shifted to Srirangam town to built a new life leaving behind the large house for the temple trust. They literally stuggled to build back their fortune. This large family always stayed together, but unfortunately very few descendants are left! What surprises me most is why none of the later generations ever feel like visiting the temple so lovingly taken care of by their fathers and grandfathers!! We either visited Tirupathi or Uppali appan koil in Kumbakonam during special occasions. Srirangam being the 1st of the 108 divya desams and also called Boolooga Vaigundam (manifestation of LordVishnu’s abode on earth) , may be there was no urge to visit other places. I grew up hearing stories of our ancestors from my parents and grandma. For long, I too did not develop any interest to visit the Krishnar koil in Nagapattinam. Some of my uncles and aunts who visited Nagai Soundaraja Perumal Kovil as a part of their piligrimage, could never get a darshan of Lord Krishna as the temple was closed everyday around 10 am after a simple puja! The temple did not have enough funds for elaborate pujas and maintenance after our ancestors left the place.
Around 6 years back I started practicing meditations. One day while I was meditating I got a glimpse of an image of Lord Krishna holding a cup of butter in one hand dancing on Kalinga Nagar, which I had never seen any where! By some strange intution I knew that it was of the image of Lord Krishna in the Temple at Nagapattinam. My husband says may be the image was stored in a gene I inherited from my ancestors! I tried convincing my father to visit the temple but did not succeed as he felt he was very weak to travel. My urge to visit the temple grew but I definitely wanted to take along some of our family members. When I spoke to my sister in law Padma, she decided that we should visit the temple. We decided to take along my nephew on his birthday to the temple. Suddenly it seemed like the lord was pleased by our devotion, with the help of my aunt Komala, we could organize everything for the visit coordinating with the people taking care of the temple and arranging for special pujas! It so happened that we visited on the first purattasi sanikizhamai, an auspicious day to have a darshan of the Lord! I found the same image of Lord Krishna doing the Kalinga Narthanam in this temple! Now a few members of our family have decided to do their best to bring back the temple to its original glory.
One of the best loved tales on Krishna’s childhood involves his defeat of the serpent Kalingan whose poisonous presence on the river Yamuna terrorized villages on the banks. Little Krishna’s dance on the five headed serpent Kalingan hood is a popular piece in almost all classical dance forms. The image of Krishna at the Krishnar Kovil at Nagapattinam is of Krishna doing the Kalinga Narthanam or dance on the serpent Kalingan’s head.

On Saturday and Sunday when we visited the temples our breakfast, lunch and dinner was the prasaadams offered at these temples. The venn pongal sarkairai or kalkandu pongal, puliyodarai (tamarind rice) and dhidyoannam(curd rice) tasted heavenly!

Nice writeup.
Thats good that you were allowed to take pictures inside the temple.
I too just go by my intuition.
Lord Krishna Idol looks very unique. You know my grandparents and their forefathers are from Nagapatinam. (missed to add it in my first comment)
I am amazed Seec! Already I have come across two people who say their grand parents are from Nagai!!:)) latha.
It was so nice to read about the temple and am stunned by the concidence of the fact that the Krishna you saw during your meditation is exactly the idol of the ancestor’s temple. These small happenings really re-affirm our faith and belief in a higher being!
Spiritualists say, ” Anything less than certainity is unworthy of God!” Miracles happen all the time!! Only some of us notice it! latha.

PS Why is the Lord holding butter?
Butter is Krishna’s favourite – Krishna is one of the popular manifestations of Lord Vishnu on earth and stories of his life are full of childhood antics and youth – especially of how he would find different ways to steal butter. you can visit this link for a gist lakshmi

HARE KRISHNA
Saw the note from Senthil posted on Oct 30, 2007.
I recently got an opportunity to visit the Aabharanadhari Vishnu Temple at Aavarani, Puducheri. The AnanthaSayanam Vishu is 21 feet long (bigger than the Srirangam Vishnu).
The Shivan Temple nearby is also very unique – Shiva Lingam there is called Nadu-Eashwarer (Nadueaswarar)– visitors can see the half-finished lingam created by Maharishi Vashistar.
I am interested in finding out about people who are from this area. My husband’s ancestors are from Aavarani, Puducheri. Anyone from around there?
Dear this is bragadeeswaran, presently at Portonovo, But i am belonging to nagapaptinam( near avarani) my natuve is kurichi 09894823364
Thankyou for your great information. Recently just last week I visited Sri Rangam. If I had read this earlier definitely I would have visited the Krishnar temple in Nagai. It is marvelous. I heard from few that Kalinga Narthinam idol should not be kept at home. Is it true.
My daughter loves Krishna like anything after seeing the Krishna serial in Cartoon Net work. The photos are excellent. Thankyou once again.

Hi Latha maami,
Just happened to read your post abt Nagai. My mother had lived near the Krishnar koil all her childhood, as she did her studies there.. I had heard so many stories abt the temple and surroundings there..but never got to visit the temple. I was so happy to see the pictures here.. It gave me a feeling like I had really been to that temple. Btw, I just want to let you know abt another temple in Nagai called ” Nellukadai Mariamman Koil” which is a very powerful amman temple. There is a story abt this amman, that it came in the dream of a rice trader and asked him to build a temple for her. Every year there is a Thiruvizha for the deity and ppl from all around come there to give their kanikkai and get her blessings. Do visit the temple if you happen to go there again.
Sudha

Wow.Beautiful images of temple and Gods.Hope to visit this temple within a couple months.
Dear Madam,
I was born and brought up in Nagapattinam, in Krishnan Koil Sannathi (In actual the street’s name is Perumal South Madavilagam). I have originally be named as ‘Gurumoorthy’ by my parents and for the reasons known well to all concerned, I have been called only by the name ‘ Kannan’ right from the very beginning.
It is a very surprise to me when I was lazily browsing for the details of our home town Nagapattinam, I saw Krishnar Koil’s entrance and I got back all my interest in me for my home town.
I can write and discuss so many things about the place and temple(s) etc., But, it wont be fair on the very first writeup itself.
Regards,
V. Kannan

Very interesting article. To add one more to the ‘born-in-Nagapattinam’ brigade I was born there 3 decades ago. My place of birth was very close to the Nellukadai Mariamman koil (not too far from the Perumal koil). My forefathers held vast chunks of land there (not anymore!) and established at least two places that I am aware of: the National High School and a bridge (Neelamegam bridge). Amazing place.
I visited Nagai 10 years ago and was contemplating the next one with my family next year. I will definitely make it a point to see the Krishna temple as well. Any updates/discussions on Nagapattinam happy to receive it on mgeepee@yahoo.com. Thanks.
Ganesh.

Hello,
My father’s native place is Nagapattinam. So we used to go every year for vacations till 1996.By then My Periappa moved to Chennai and so we have not been there for quite some time. But I do wish to visit in the near future. We lived in Neela Sannidhi and the Neelayadakshi Amman Temple was our second home. I really can’t forget those days.

Dear Sir,
I was very happy to see ur link about Neelayadakshi Ambal. My Great grandmother’s name is Neelayadashi. They were all from nagai district. We are all now settled in chennai. Some how when ever i hear the song “THIRUNAGAI KARONAM ” SUNG BY MAHANADHI SHOBANA IN NAVARAGHA SWAROOPINI,tears would roll from my eyes and will always become emotional. i don’t know the reason till date. Because of my urge my mother took me once to the temple in 1995.It was very difficult for us to find the location of the temple. But some how had a darshan of Ambal in the evening around 6:30. Power cut was there and could see her in the light of Deepam. Still i remember that moment.
Now since we were blessed with Twin Boys after 8 years of marriage i wanted to take my kids & do abhishekam in the temple. We are staying in UAE and have booked my tickets for September.i was browsing the net to find contact numbers of the temple to organise for Abhishekam & came accross ur article. Can u by any means help me out to get contact numbers. jananikarthikeyan@gmail.com is my id.waiting for ur reply.
Thanks & Regards
